Eldoret, Kenya — The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a stern warning to Kenyans against tampering with mobile phones acquired through credit purchase schemes, commonly known as lipa mdogo mdogo. The alert comes in the wake of a rising trend in cybercrime involving mobile phone hacking.
This warning follows the arrest of two suspects in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County, who were allegedly involved in hacking mobile devices. According to police reports, the two were caught red-handed manipulating 28 different mobile phones at the time of the raid.
“We caught them red-handed working on 28 different mobile phones when we raided the premises,” said a police spokesperson.
Authorities are now cautioning the public against buying cheap second-hand mobile phones, particularly from unlicensed dealers. Such phones may be stolen, tampered with, or involved in cybercrime activities.
“We urge the public to be vigilant when buying these second-hand mobile phones,” added the spokesperson.
The police are encouraging Kenyans to report any suspicious activity related to mobile phone sales or usage to the nearest police station or by calling emergency numbers 999 or 911.
Recent statistics indicate a worrying rise in mobile phone-related cyberattacks, with 119,661 reported cases this year — a significant increase compared to previous years. The growing trend has raised concerns over the misuse of mobile technology and the vulnerabilities in unsecured devices.
The NPS continues to call for public cooperation in the fight against digital crime, urging citizens to stay alert and only purchase devices from authorized and verified sources.
