Nandi Governor H.E. Stephen Sang has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Fr. Allois Cheruiyot Bett, whose life was tragically cut short in a recent bandit attack in Tot, Elgeyo-Marakwet County. In a moving statement issued following a solemn requiem mass held in Eldoret, Governor Sang mourned the clergyman as a beacon of faith and peace whose legacy will live on in the Kerio Valley and beyond.
“The late Fr. Allois Cheruiyot Bett’s divine calling was deeply evident in his dedicated missionary work across the Kerio Valley. With unwavering commitment, he went beyond the call of duty to spread the Gospel, champion peace, and uplift the lives of those in the community,” said Governor Sang.
Fr. Bett, remembered for his tireless service in some of the region’s most volatile areas, was killed in the line of duty while serving the people he so dearly loved. His murder has reignited national concern over the growing insecurity in the North Rift.
During the requiem mass held at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Eldoret and presided over by Rt. Rev. Dr. Dominic Kimengich, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret, hundreds gathered to celebrate Fr. Bett’s life and mourn his tragic death. Also in attendance were Rt. Rev. Dr. Christopher Ruto, Bishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya Diocese of Eldoret, Uasin Gishu Governor H.E. Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor H.E. Wisely Rotich, Nandi Deputy Governor H.E. Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot, and Women Representative Hon. Cynthia Muge. Several county assembly speakers, including Hon. Philip Muigei (Uasin Gishu) and Hon. Lawi Kibire (Elgeyo Marakwet), also graced the ceremony.
“May the innocent blood of Fr. Allois Cheruiyot Bett, shed in the line of duty, become a seed of lasting peace in the Kerio Valley,” Governor Sang prayed, calling on leaders and citizens alike to honor his memory by fostering unity and dialogue in the region.
Fr. Bett will be laid to rest on Friday, May 30. As the community prepares to bid farewell, the sorrow felt across counties is also matched by a determination to uphold his message of love, resilience, and peace.
“Rest in eternal peace, Fr. Allois,” Governor Sang concluded. “Your legacy of faith and peace lives on.”
