The late Father Allois Bett, a beloved Catholic priest who tragically lost his life in a bandit attack, will be laid to rest on Friday, May 30, in what is expected to be an emotional farewell.
Father Bett was fatally shot by suspected bandits in Tot, a region in Elgeyo-Marakwet County that has struggled with sporadic insecurity and violence in recent years. The attack has sent shockwaves through the local community and the wider Catholic faithful, who are mourning the loss of a clergyman widely known for his commitment to peace and social service.
Bishop Dominic Kimengich of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret confirmed the burial date, adding that preparations are underway to honor the life and service of Father Bett. "He was a man of great faith, courage, and compassion. His death is not only a blow to the Church but to the entire community," Bishop Kimengich said.
Father Bett had served in various parishes across the Rift Valley, ministering to communities with deep-rooted challenges but also deep faith. His dedication to reconciliation and support for youth programs earned him admiration across religious and ethnic lines.
The burial will take place at his home parish, with a requiem mass planned for Thursday. Church leaders, local government officials, and hundreds of parishioners are expected to attend to pay their final respects.
