Mugiithi Star Samidoh in Spotlight Over Viral Performance and Political Ties

Popular Kenyan mugiithi musician and police officer Samuel Muchoki, popularly known as Samidoh, has found himself at the center of public debate following the viral spread of his performance on the slogan “Wantam.”

The video, which began circulating widely on social media on May 27, drew massive public attention and led to claims that the celebrated singer had been transferred from the National Police Service (NPS) headquarters in Nairobi to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) in Gilgil.

In response to the speculation, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja addressed the matter on May 28, stating that the transfer was “routine and procedural” and had no political influence behind it.

“Samidoh’s transfer was conducted according to standard internal procedures and should not be linked to politics or his public profile,” Kanja clarified.

The musician, who serves both as a law enforcement officer and a cultural icon, has recently been seen engaging with prominent political figures, fueling further controversy. He was first spotted in a meeting with Deputy Chief Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, who is in opposition, and weeks later was seen visiting Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki at his residence.

The appearances have drawn criticism from opposition leaders, who now demand that Samidoh issue a public apology or face a boycott from their supporters. They allege that his engagements appear politically motivated and raise questions about his neutrality as a public servant.

However, Samidoh has not officially declared support for any political side, and many Kenyans have come to his defense. Social media users have condemned the opposition’s demands, arguing that such actions infringe on his constitutional right to freedom of expression and association.

“This is a clear violation of personal freedoms,” said one user on X (formerly Twitter). “Samidoh is a musician, not a politician. He should be allowed to meet anyone without being threatened.”

The singer has not yet issued a public statement regarding the controversy or his next steps, but the incident continues to ignite debate on the role of public figures in politics and the boundaries between personal freedom and public service.

As the discussions grow louder, many are watching closely to see how both the government and opposition will handle the situation, and whether Samidoh will bow to pressure or remain firm in his silence.
