The Kenyan government, through the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), has introduced tougher regulations on gambling advertisements to promote responsible gambling and protect minors. Announced on Friday, May 30, 2025, the new rules mandate that all gambling ads be submitted to the BCLB for approval and forwarded to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for classification before distribution or exhibition. Additionally, the use of celebrities and influencers in gambling advertisements is now banned to curb their influence on vulnerable populations.
BCLB chairperson Dr. Jane Makau stated, “The Board will continue to evaluate the gambling industry and issue additional guidelines to promote responsible gambling and safeguard punters.” The measures aim to prevent exploitative advertising practices and ensure content is appropriate, particularly to protect minors from gambling-related harm.
The ban on celebrities and influencers reflects concerns about their role in glamorizing gambling, especially among youth. The BCLB’s oversight will ensure ads adhere to ethical standards, with the KFCB ensuring compliance with national content guidelines. Non-compliance may result in penalties, though specific enforcement details were not disclosed.
The BCLB emphasized ongoing monitoring of the gambling industry, with further guidelines expected to address emerging issues. Betting companies are urged to comply promptly to avoid disruptions. These regulations mark a significant step in Kenya’s efforts to regulate the gambling sector and prioritize consumer protection.
