Digital Literacy Drive Launched in Nandi Hills to Empower Communities

In a significant boost to the government’s efforts to increase digital literacy among citizens, a subsidized computer training program dubbed “Building Digital Skills for a Brighter Future” has been launched in Nandi Hills. The one-month program is set to kick off on June 14, 2025, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and will run through mid-July.

The initiative is a joint effort between Leonard Arap Kirwa, a respected community mobilizer and development advocate, and the Nehema Institute of Science and Technology, an institution known for offering practical, industry-aligned technical and digital skills training. The program is in line with President William Ruto’s national ICT agenda, which seeks to ensure digital inclusion for all, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The training will cover essential computer skills, including basic digital literacy, internet navigation, word processing, spreadsheet management, email communication, online safety, and introduction to digital opportunities. The sessions are tailored for both beginners and those seeking to refresh or upgrade their ICT knowledge.

Speaking during the program’s announcement, Leonard Arap Kirwa underscored the importance of technology in today’s rapidly evolving world.

“In today’s digital era, computer literacy is no longer a luxury but a necessity. This training will not only equip participants with vital skills but also open up doors to employment, online business, e-government services, and digital communication,” he said.

Mr. Kirwa added that the initiative targets youths, school leavers, job seekers, small business owners, and anyone in the community who wants to keep pace with the digital world. By offering the training at a subsidized rate, the program ensures that financial constraints do not lock out those who need the skills most.

Representatives from Nehema Institute expressed their enthusiasm about partnering in the project, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to transforming lives through practical education.

“This partnership is a reflection of our mission to bring quality training closer to the people. We believe in the power of knowledge, and through programs like this, we can empower communities to thrive in the digital economy,” said a Nehema spokesperson.

The program’s motto, “Building Digital Skills for a Brighter Future,” reflects its broader goal — not just teaching computers, but building a future where residents of Nandi Hills can confidently participate in the global digital space.

Local leaders and church officials have welcomed the initiative, noting that it aligns well with efforts to uplift youth and promote digital transformation in the region.

The organizers have encouraged early registration due to limited slots. Interested individuals can sign up at the church office or by contacting the numbers provided on official program posters around the area.
