Kalonzo, Irungu Nyakera Decry Soaring Insecurity, Abductions in Nairobi

Wiper Party leader HE Kalonzo Musyoka and former KICC Chairperson Irungu Nyakera have raised the alarm over the heightened cases of insecurity in the country, including the recent spiraling cases of killings of members of the clergy and abductions of young people involved in anti-government protests.

Speaking to reporters after a closed-door meeting in Nairobi, the two leaders expressed their deep concern over what they described as a "disturbing return to the dark days" of repression, likening the current environment to the Moi-era crackdown on dissent.

"This is not the Kenya we struggled for. This kidnapping and intimidation of Gen Z youth and any citizen who dare challenge the government is not acceptable," said Nyakera. "We cannot stay quiet when voices of reason and religious leaders are silenced through violence and intimidation."

Nyakera, a vocal advocate for good governance and youth empowerment, continued to say that the discussion with Kalonzo Musyoka also covered the urgent need to restore trust in public institutions and civil liberties for all Kenyans.

On his part, Kalonzo reaffirmed his commitment to mentorship of a new generation of leaders and encouraged the youth not to lose hope despite growing threats to democracy.

"We must guard the democratic gains we have achieved as a country. Violence and intimidation of citizens, especially the youth and clergy, can only take us backwards," Kalonzo stated.

The two leaders called upon state agencies to ensure obedience to the rule of law and citizens to be on high alert and united in defense of their rights.

Their meeting comes as the country is ever more tense, with civil society groups and religious organizations demanding answers to a string of unexplained abductions and the rising crackdown on dissent.
