Government Pushes Livestock Sector Commercialisation Amidst Growing Leather Industry Earnings: Spotlight on Dr. Isaack Noor’s Tireless Leadership

By John Kariuki

KAREN, Nairobi County — The Kenyan government has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to commercialising the livestock sector, aiming to boost household incomes from livestock and its diverse value chains, including beef, leather, and other related products. Key initiatives such as the national livestock vaccination programme, the Kenya Leather Industrial Park (KLIP), and enhanced farmer earnings from leather products stand as pillars of this transformative agenda.

In recent years, Kenya’s leather industry has witnessed remarkable growth. Earnings from leather and leather products surged from 4.9 billion shillings in 2022 to 7.5 billion shillings in 2023, culminating in an impressive 9.5 billion shillings in 2024. This upward trajectory is a testament to targeted interventions aimed at strengthening the sector’s productivity and market reach.

Central to these advancements is the exemplary leadership of Dr. Isaack Noor, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Leather Development Council. Dr. Noor’s relentless efforts have been pivotal in steering the leather industry towards greater commercial viability. Under his stewardship, the council has played a crucial role in the development and operationalisation of the Kenya Leather Industrial Park, a flagship project designed to consolidate Kenya’s leather processing capabilities and stimulate local manufacturing.

Dr. Noor’s strategic vision extends beyond infrastructure development; he has championed sustainable practices, capacity building for artisans, and enhanced market access for leather producers. His engagement with stakeholders across the value chain has fostered an enabling environment where both small-scale farmers and industrial players can thrive.

The State Department for Livestock recently provided a comprehensive update on the progress of these initiatives, highlighting the synergy between government policy and the proactive role of industry leaders like Dr. Noor. This partnership underscores a shared objective: to unlock greater economic potential in the livestock sector, thereby uplifting the livelihoods of countless Kenyan families.

As Kenya continues to harness its livestock resources, the momentum generated through coordinated efforts promises a future where the sector not only contributes substantially to the national economy but also empowers communities to achieve sustainable prosperity.
