Eldoret National Polytechnic Marks Successful Completion of RPL External Quality Assurance Exercise

The Eldoret National Polytechnic today celebrated a significant milestone in the advancement of skills recognition and quality assurance in education, as it successfully concluded the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) external quality assurance process.

The week-long exercise came to a strong finish with an exit meeting attended by key stakeholders and overseen by Dr. Charles Koech, Chief Principal of The Eldoret National Polytechnic, and Madam Peninah Ogutu, Deputy Principal in charge of Academics. The process was officiated by Dr. Wanyeki from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) and Mr. Alfrick from the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA).

The event brought together a wide range of RPL stakeholders, including Janet Isoka, the institution’s RPL Coordinator, Albert Odula, Deputy RPL Coordinator, RPL practitioners, and industry experts across various technical and vocational fields. Their collective involvement ensured that the RPL assessments were rigorous, credible, and aligned with industry expectations.

A key highlight of the exercise was the active participation of informal sector (Juakali) practitioners, who provided valuable insights into the real-world application of skills. Their contributions were led by Mr. Ayot, Chairman, and Mr. Opar, Secretary General, representing a broad spectrum of artisanal and technical trades.

“The presence and input of Juakali practitioners ensured that our RPL assessments truly reflected lifelong learning and the practical competencies developed outside formal classrooms,” said Dr. Koech during the closing session.

The RPL process is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to recognize and accredit skills acquired through non-formal and informal learning, offering skilled individuals an opportunity to gain formal qualifications and contribute more effectively to the economy.

Stakeholders expressed appreciation to all who contributed to the quality and accountability of the process, emphasizing the importance of such collaborations in strengthening vocational education.

“This is a victory for inclusive education and skills-based growth. Through partnerships between institutions, regulators, industry, and the informal sector, we are creating pathways to recognition and opportunity for all Kenyans,” noted Dr. Wanyeki of TVETA.

As the country continues to implement the Kenya National Qualifications Framework, this milestone at The Eldoret National Polytechnic sets an example of how RPL can bridge the gap between informal skills and formal recognition, boosting employability, productivity, and national development.
