Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Julius Bitok, has confirmed that the ongoing Grade 9 to Grade 10 transition process is progressing well, with critical systems in place to ensure a smooth and inclusive rollout for all learners under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Speaking on the progress of the school selection process for the pioneer CBC cohort, Dr. Bitok announced that a pilot phase is currently being conducted in 47 selected schools—one in each county—to test the efficiency of the selection model before the official national launch next month.
“We are pleased to report that the piloting is going on well as planned. The Ministry is fully committed to ensuring that every Grade 9 learner transitions seamlessly to senior school without confusion or disruption,” said Dr. Bitok.
He added that the Ministry has directed schools countrywide to intensify public awareness and sensitization efforts targeting parents, guardians, and learners to ensure the selection process is well understood and fairly executed.
“Schools have been instructed to guide families through the selection process, ensuring learners make informed choices based on their talents, interests, and career aspirations,” he said.
Dr. Bitok reassured stakeholders that no learner will miss the opportunity to select their preferred schools this term, emphasizing the government’s commitment to equity and transparency in the transition process.
The Grade 10 selection process marks a critical step in the CBC rollout, where learners will begin their specialization in three distinct pathways: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences; and Sports & Performing Arts.
Dr. Bitok lauded the support of teachers, school administrators, and education officers for their cooperation in ensuring the smooth implementation of this phase.
“We are not just facilitating a transition; we are shaping the future of this generation. We thank all education stakeholders for walking with us on this important journey,” he said.
The official national launch of the Grade 10 selection platform is expected in June 2025. The Ministry has committed to providing further guidelines and technical support to schools to ensure the success of the selection and placement process.
