Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has officially handed over the newly upgraded Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County to the National Celebrations Steering Committee in preparation for this year’s Madaraka Day national celebrations set for June 1.
The handover marks the completion of a presidential directive issued by President William Ruto in December 2024 to modernize the facility into a 12,000-seater stadium within a tight four-month timeline.
Speaking during the ceremony, CS Mvurya lauded the “Whole-of-Government Approach” that enabled the swift delivery of the project, calling it a testament to effective collaboration among state agencies in meeting critical infrastructure goals.
“This stadium stands not only as a venue for our national celebrations but also as a symbol of what can be achieved through unity, urgency, and dedication,” said Mvurya. “We have delivered a world-class facility for the people of Homa Bay and for the nation.”
The handover event was attended by key government officials including Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, and Interior Principal Secretary and Committee Chair Dr. Raymond Omollo. Also present were representatives from Sports Kenya, led by Board Chairman Mark L, and members of the National Celebrations Steering Committee.
The upgraded stadium will host the 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations — the first of its kind to be held in Homa Bay County — and is expected to draw thousands of guests from across the country.
Governor Wanga praised the national government’s commitment to devolving national events and bringing lasting infrastructure to the region, noting the stadium would serve generations to come.
“We are proud to host this year’s Madaraka Day. This stadium will not only be a site for national pride but will support sports development, youth programs, and local economic growth,” said Wanga.
With construction now complete, the stadium features modern seating, improved drainage, upgraded facilities, and enhanced security infrastructure.
The government has been rotating national celebrations across counties to promote inclusivity, decentralization of development, and national unity.
