Ziwa Hospital Makes Medical History as First Caesarean Section is Successfully Performed
Ziwa Sub-County Hospital has reached a major milestone after successfully conducting its first-ever Caesarean section, marking a significant advancement in maternal healthcare services for residents of Uasin Gishu County.
The procedure, carried out by a qualified multidisciplinary medical team at Ziwa Sub-County Hospital, signals a new chapter in the expansion of emergency obstetric care at the sub-county level. Health officials say the achievement will greatly improve access to life-saving maternal services for expectant mothers in Ziwa and surrounding areas.
Previously, women requiring emergency surgical delivery were often referred to larger facilities in Eldoret and other referral hospitals—journeys that could pose serious risks during critical complications. With the introduction of Caesarean services locally, delays in receiving urgent care are expected to reduce significantly.
The breakthrough has been attributed to sustained investment in health infrastructure and staffing by the County Government of Uasin Gishu County under the leadership of Governor Jonathan Bii. Officials say improvements in theatre equipment, medical supplies, and specialist training have strengthened the hospital’s capacity to handle complex procedures.
County Health Services Executive Janet Kurgat and Clinical Services Chief Officer Ambrose Tarus recently inspected the facility’s theatre readiness, expressing confidence in its ability to safely support surgical interventions.
Residents and local leaders have welcomed the development, describing it as a life-saving step that will reduce maternal and infant mortality and bring critical healthcare closer to the community.
Health officials say the successful procedure is part of a broader county strategy to decentralize specialized services and strengthen sub-county hospitals, positioning Ziwa as an emerging hub for improved maternal and child health care.
