Rural Uasin Gishu School Eases CBC Career Pathway Anxiety for Parents and Learners
As Kenya continues implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), many parents and learners remain uncertain about how to navigate career pathways under the new system. But in Soy Subcounty County, a public primary school is quietly emerging as a model of structured guidance and early preparation.
At Segero Adventist Primary School, located more than 50 kilometres from Eldoret, administrators say deliberate career sensitization programmes have helped hundreds of learners make informed academic choices over the last two years.
Structured Career Guidance Under CBC
Under Kenya’s CBC framework, learners will transition to Senior School through three main pathways: Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
According to the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), the CBC is designed to nurture individual talents and competencies rather than rely solely on examination performance. The Ministry of Education has repeatedly emphasized the importance of early career guidance to help learners align their strengths with future opportunities.
At Segero Adventist, that guidance begins early—and includes parents.
Headteacher Michael Korir says consistent career pathway sensitization sessions have significantly improved learner focus and confidence.
“We realized that many parents and learners were confused about CBC pathways,” said Mr. Korir. “So we began structured training sessions involving both students and their parents. Once a child understands their strengths and possible career direction, their concentration in class improves.”
He adds that adequate staffing through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has strengthened delivery.
“With enough teachers, we have time not only to teach but to identify individual abilities. That makes it easier to guide learners toward suitable pathways early enough,” he said.
National School Admissions Reflect Progress
The school’s efforts appear to be yielding measurable outcomes. In recent placement cycles, Segero Adventist has sent learners to leading national schools, including Kapsabet Boys High School, Moi Girls High School Eldoret, State House Girls High School and Moi High School Kabarak.
School administrators attribute the success not only to academic preparation but also to clarity of direction among learners.
Infrastructure Boost Strengthens Learning Environment
The institution is also undergoing significant infrastructure expansion supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
New classrooms and improved facilities are positioning the school to meet CBC’s evolving demands, particularly as the country prepares learners for the Junior and Senior School transition phases.
Education experts note that adequate facilities are critical to implementing CBC effectively, especially in pathways such as Arts and Sports Science that require dedicated spaces.
Arts and Poetry Thrive Under CBC
Segero Adventist has also recorded notable progress in creative arts, particularly poetry, under the Arts and Sports Science pathway.
Poetry teacher John Musabi says the CBC framework has enabled learners to explore their creative talents more confidently.
“The Arts and Sports Science pathway has opened doors for our learners,” said Mr. Musambi. “We have developed strong poetry talent, and students are now using their creativity to speak about development and government support in schools.”
Education stakeholders argue that arts-based learning enhances communication, critical thinking, and self-expression—skills central to CBC’s competency model.
A Possible Blueprint for Rural Schools
As CBC implementation continues nationwide, the experience at Segero Adventist Primary School highlights the impact of structured career sensitization, adequate staffing, parental involvement, and infrastructure investment.
For many parents in Moiben, what once seemed like a confusing educational overhaul is gradually becoming a clearer pathway toward opportunity.
