Tension in Eldoret as Boda Boda Riders Protest Alleged Assault
Tension gripped Eldoret on Tuesday after dozens of angry boda boda riders stormed the County Government offices, protesting the alleged brutal assault of one of their colleagues by a county enforcement officer, commonly known as kanjo.
According to the riders, the incident occurred during an enforcement operation in the town’s central business district. They claim the officer assaulted the rider without provocation, leaving him with serious bruises and injuries. The injured rider was later taken to hospital for treatment, though the extent of his injuries had not been officially confirmed by authorities by the time of reporting.
The protestors gathered outside the county offices, chanting slogans and demanding immediate justice and accountability. Some riders waved helmets and motorcycles keys in the air as a sign of defiance, while others called for the suspension and arrest of the officer involved. Emotions ran high, forcing police officers to reinforce security around the premises to prevent the situation from escalating.
“This harassment must stop. We are just trying to earn a living,” said one boda boda rider, who accused county askaris of routinely using excessive force during crackdowns.
County officials acknowledged the protest and said they were aware of the allegations. A senior county administrator, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that investigations had been launched into the incident and urged the public to remain calm as due process takes its course.
Police also confirmed they were monitoring the situation and appealed for restraint, warning that any acts of violence or destruction of property would be dealt with according to the law.
The incident once again highlights the strained relationship between boda boda operators and county enforcement officers, a recurring issue in many urban centres across the country. As investigations continue, riders insist they will not back down until action is taken against those responsible.
