Kenya, Australia Explore Deeper Education Cooperation to Strengthen CBC Implementation

The Government of Kenya is seeking to strengthen international cooperation in the education sector as part of ongoing reforms aimed at delivering a future-ready and globally competitive workforce.

Principal Secretary for Basic Education Prof. Julius Bitok on Thursday held discussions with Dr. Wilson Kipngetich Arap Kogo, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Australia, focusing on ways to enhance Kenya’s basic education system through knowledge exchange and education diplomacy.

According to Prof. Bitok, the engagement centered on advancing the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), aligning Kenya’s examination and assessment frameworks with global best practices, and strengthening evidence-based curriculum development.

The talks also explored opportunities for collaboration in teacher education and continuous professional development, with particular emphasis on learning from Australia’s education system, which has extensive experience in competency-based learning, assessment reforms, and teacher training.

“As the Government continues to implement education reforms, insights from the Australian education system provide valuable opportunities for collaboration,” Prof. Bitok said.

He added that sustained engagement and partnerships with international counterparts will be critical in supporting curriculum reforms, improving learning outcomes, and enhancing the capacity of teachers and education managers.

Prof. Bitok reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging education diplomacy to support national development priorities, noting that strategic partnerships will help ensure Kenyan learners acquire relevant skills, competencies, and values needed in a rapidly changing global environment.

The discussions form part of broader efforts by the Ministry of Education to benchmark Kenya’s reforms against international standards while safeguarding local relevance, equity, and access to quality education for all learners.
