EBK Conducts Accreditation Evaluation of Engineering Programmes at Meru University

The Engineering Accreditation Committee of the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) is currently conducting an evaluation exercise at Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) as part of the process of accrediting engineering programmes offered by the institution.

The evaluation covers six engineering programmes submitted by the University for recognition, in line with EBK’s mandate under Section 8 of the Engineers Act, 2011, to enhance and safeguard the quality and standards of engineering education in Kenya.

Speaking during the exercise, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of EBK, Eng. Margaret Ogai, commended Meru University for its proactive decision to submit the programmes for evaluation. She noted that the move followed a courtesy visit by the Board in July 2024 and demonstrated the University’s strong commitment to quality, relevance, and continuous improvement in engineering education.

Eng. Ogai emphasized that accreditation of engineering programmes by a legally mandated authority is an international requirement. She explained that through the accreditation process, the Board ensures that programmes align with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles and internationally recognised graduate attributes, which are critical for producing competent and globally competitive engineers.

The Vice-Chancellor of Meru University of Science and Technology, Prof. Romanus Odhiambo, who addressed the gathering virtually, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to providing quality education, training, and research in science, technology, and innovation. He urged members of staff in the Faculty of Engineering to register with the Engineers Board of Kenya, noting that professional registration is key to strengthening the credibility and impact of engineering education and practice.

Prof. Odhiambo also lauded EBK for its role in regulating the engineering profession and safeguarding academic and professional standards in the country.

The accreditation exercise is expected to further strengthen the University’s engineering programmes and enhance their alignment with national and international best practices.
