PS Treasury Dr. Chris Kiptoo Leads Nation in Mourning Chesongoch Landslide Victims
The nation stood still today as families, community members, clergy, and leaders from both the national and county governments gathered to honour the 41 lives lost in the devastating Chesongoch landslide and mudslides that struck on the night of 1st November 2025.
In a deeply moving mass and burial ceremony attended by grieving families and hundreds of residents, the atmosphere was heavy with sorrow yet strengthened by unity and prayer. Clergy members led the congregation in moments of reflection, drawing from scripture to offer comfort to those affected.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 — echoed through the ceremony, serving as a reminder of God’s presence amid profound loss.
The tragedy claimed lives across Chesongoch and neighbouring villages, sweeping away homes, farms, and livelihoods. Entire families were displaced, and the community continues to grapple with the scale of destruction and grief.
Speaking during the ceremony, Principal Secretary for The National Treasury, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, assured residents that the government is committed to ensuring long-term solutions to prevent the recurrence of such disasters.
“We will take bold and decisive steps to address this perennial challenge once and for all,” he said. “We stand firmly with the affected families and remain dedicated to supporting ongoing humanitarian, recovery, and rebuilding efforts.”
Humanitarian teams, county officials, and national agencies continue to work on restoring access, supporting displaced families, and assessing the full extent of damage as rebuilding efforts begin.
As families laid their loved ones to rest, community members held onto one another—finding strength in solidarity even as they faced immeasurable pain.
May the souls of our departed brothers, sisters, parents, and children rest in eternal peace. May their memories inspire resilience, compassion, and a renewed commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities across Kenya.
