The late Raila Odinga’s final resting place at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Opoda village has become a focal point of national political activity, as top leaders from across Kenya troop to his graveside to mourn, pay tribute, and send powerful political signals ahead of the 2027 General Election.

What began as solemn visits to honour the departed opposition leader and former Prime Minister has evolved into a series of high-profile pilgrimages blending cultural respect, expressions of cross-ethnic solidarity, and strategic political messaging.

This week, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka led a delegation to Opoda farm, where he was warmly received by members of the Odinga family and senior ODM officials. Siaya Governor James Orengo lauded Kalonzo as a “selfless politician driven by values,” noting his past decisions to shelve his own presidential ambitions to support Odinga’s bids for the top seat.

Orengo used the occasion to warn against the erosion of Kenya’s political parties, stressing that “strong parties are the foundation of democracy.” He urged ODM members to safeguard their party from absorption, citing the collapse of earlier parties such as KADU, PNU, DP, and the near disintegration of Jubilee.

Kalonzo’s visit followed that of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, who led a delegation from the Gusii region to pay respects at the Odinga homestead. Sources close to Opoda farm have hinted that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua may also be planning a visit, underscoring the site’s emerging role as a symbol of unity and a potential political pilgrimage ground.

Meanwhile, the future of ODM and its place in President William Ruto’s broad-based government has taken centre stage in discussions surrounding the post-Odinga political landscape. Politicians allied to Ruto have hinted at a possible alliance with ODM, framing it as part of a wider effort to build an inclusive administration.

Among other notable visitors was NARC Kenya leader Martha Karua, Odinga’s 2022 running mate, who pledged to carry forward his vision and hinted at continued cooperation with ODM and his allies. KANU chairman Gideon Moi also visited the graveside, reaffirming the long-standing ties between the Moi and Odinga political dynasties.

As delegations continue to stream into Kang’o ka Jaramogi, the late Odinga’s homestead has transformed into both a cultural and political stage — a place where grief and tribute intertwine with Kenya’s unfolding power realignments.
