Ngunjiri Wambugu Vows to Quit Jubilee if Uhuru Partners with Gachagua

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has declared that he would immediately leave the Jubilee Party if former President Uhuru Kenyatta were to forge a political alliance with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking on Saturday, Wambugu said he would not be part of any political arrangement involving Gachagua, whom he accused of engaging in divisive and opportunistic politics.

“If Uhuru was to work with Gachagua, I would leave Jubilee immediately,” Wambugu stated. “I can’t operate in the kind of politics I have seen Gachagua do — even for Uhuru. So if they got into bed, I would disassociate myself from both Uhuru and Jubilee.”

The outspoken former legislator, a close ally of Uhuru during his presidency, has in recent months been critical of the political realignments taking shape in Mt. Kenya. His remarks come amid growing speculation about possible reconciliation efforts between Gachagua and Uhuru’s allies to unify the region ahead of the 2027 general election.

Wambugu insisted that any cooperation with the Deputy President would undermine the values that Jubilee once stood for, accusing Gachagua of pursuing “ethnic mobilization and power games rather than national unity.”

“We can’t talk about rebuilding the country or reviving Jubilee while partnering with someone whose politics thrive on intimidation and manipulation,” Wambugu added.

The former MP’s statement underscores the simmering political tensions within the Mt. Kenya region, where leaders remain sharply divided between pro-government and opposition factions.

While Gachagua has in recent weeks extended olive branches to various leaders from the region, urging unity under his leadership, Wambugu’s remarks signal resistance from those still loyal to the former president.

Jubilee, once the ruling party, has struggled to regain political relevance after the 2022 elections, with internal wrangles and defections weakening its base.

Wambugu’s firm stance suggests that any potential political rapprochement between Uhuru and Gachagua could deepen rifts among central Kenya leaders, complicating efforts to consolidate the region’s political future ahead of the next polls.
