Murkomen, First Lady visit landslide victims in Elgeyo-Marakwet





Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport  Kipchumba Murkomen has joinedFirst Lady Mama Rachel Rutoin visiting the families affected by the recent landslide tragedy in Elgeyo-Marakwet County** that has so far claimed 37 lives, with 11 people still missing.

During the visit to Chesongoch in Marakwet East Sub-County, the delegation condoled with the bereaved families, assessed the extent of the devastation, and distributed relief supplies to hundreds of displaced residents currently camping at Chesongoch Primary School.

The First Lady conveyed words of comfort and assurance from President William Ruto to the victims, ensuring them that the Government would do all it can to support them in reclaiming their lives and livelihoods after the disaster.

"The President is worried about your suffering, and he has directed that all relevant agencies collaborate to ensure no family is left behind in the efforts to support those affected. The Government will continue to support as recovery efforts progress," said Mama Rachel Ruto.

He commended the multi-agency search and rescue team that continues to comb through the area for the missing persons. He also underscored the government's determination to strengthen disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, especially in landslide-prone regions.

We are working closely with both national and county disaster response teams to enhance early warning systems, as well as strengthen infrastructure resilience to avert such tragedies in the future, said CS Murkomen.

The First Lady and the Cabinet Secretary were accompanied by CS Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport) and CS Geoffrey Ruku (Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes)**, as well as Governors Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo-Marakwet)and Stephen Sang (Nandi).

Present were Deputy Governors Prof. Grace Cheserek of Elgeyo-Marakwet and Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot of Nandi, Senator William Kisang, Woman Representative Caroline Ng'elechei, MPs Kangogo Bowen of Marakwet East and Adams Kipsanai of Keiyo North, Acting County Commissioner Julius Maiyo, several MCAs, among other government officials.


The visit underlined the Government's solidarity with the people of Elgeyo-Marakwet and its continued resolve to support affected families as they recover from the disaster.
