Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024 Enters Final Preparations as Athletics Kenya Confirms Gold Label Readiness

With only 20 days to the third edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024, Athletics Kenya (AK) president Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jack Tuwei has confirmed that preparations for the December 6, 2025 race are progressing smoothly, with all major logistical, technical, and operational requirements nearly complete. Speaking during a Sunday inspection tour at Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024  Stage, Tuwei emphasized that meticulous planning and early preparation are essential for the event to meet World Athletics Gold Label standards.

“This morning we came to check whether everything is in place—whether the program is ready, whether the route is finalized, and whether the athletes and officials can participate without issues. Planning is not enough; planning must be confirmed,” Tuwei said, stressing the importance of reviewing every detail ahead of the event.

Registration Closed Early to Meet Gold Label Requirements

The Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024, which was promoted to gold label status last year—just one year after its debut—is now fully integrated into the global athletics calendar. Tuwei explained that early closure of registration, three weeks ahead of race day, is part of compliance with international regulations.

“This is a gold label event. There are rules and regulations that must be followed. Athletes’ registration must be cleared in advance, drug-testing facilities arranged, results systems in place. There is no room for last-minute changes,” he said.

He added that such measures ensure fairness and transparency, protecting both athletes and Kenya’s reputation in international athletics. “We want to maintain the high standards that come with gold label status. This is not just a local race—it’s a world-class event.”

Route Adjustments and Improved Facilities

This year, the race route has been slightly altered compared to previous editions to enhance safety and performance. Sharp curves have been minimized, hills smoothed, and accessibility improved for athletes, officials, and spectators. VIP and media areas have also been upgraded to ensure comfort and convenience.

“We are improving every year. The start point is now closer, curves are gentler, and hills are less steep. The goal is to provide a world-class course that meets international standards,” Tuwei said.

He also highlighted the importance of results management and communication technology for live coverage. “Proper results management is crucial. Every athlete must know their exact placement. Technology and communication systems must support live broadcasting because this event is being followed around the world.”

Community Benefits and Local Excitement

Beyond elite athletics, Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024 is benefiting local communities. Stephen Kimayo, a community representative, said the event brings economic, infrastructural, and social benefits to residents.

“The locals are happy. This event boosts our businesses, improves roads, and even provides clean piped water. The network infrastructure for live coverage also benefits the community,” Kimayo said.

He added that younger athletes will have the opportunity to participate in a local race before the main event, encouraging grassroots involvement while allowing elders and youth to engage with the sport.

Education Through Bursaries

One of the hallmark initiatives of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024 is its commitment to education under the “Land for Education” theme. Before race day, 21 schools have already received KSh 1 million each to support 100 needy students per school through bursaries.

“This is not just a race. It supports children, schools, and the community. We are giving back through education while promoting athletics,” Kimayo said.

Kenya’s Bigger Vision: Hosting Global Championships

Tuwei emphasized that the  Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024is part of a broader plan to elevate Kenya on the global athletics stage. The country has applied to host either the 2029 or 2031 World Athletics Championships, and the performance of gold label events like Chemsaita is a critical factor in the evaluation.

“These races are stepping stones. From hosting the World Cross Country in 2007, the African Championships in 2010, to World U18 in 2017 and U20 in 2021, Kenya has been proving it can manage international competitions. Gold label events like this one show we are capable,” Tuwei said.

Final Preparations Underway

With 20 days to race day, AK officials will continue monitoring developments on the ground, ensuring the route, facilities, and technical arrangements are fully ready. Tuwei expressed satisfaction with the progress so far.

“I am very satisfied with the preparations. The route has been adjusted, facilities are improving, and technical officials are doing a great job. By December 6, we want both local and international athletes to experience a seamless, world-class event,” he said.

Excitement Among Athletes and Media

The Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024 has already attracted significant attention from athletes, officials, and the media. With over 1,600 registered under-18 athletes and numerous senior participants, the event promises to showcase Kenya’s depth in long-distance running while also serving as a platform for emerging talent.

“We welcome all athletes to train hard and be ready. Kenya and the world will witness a truly exciting competition,” Tuwei said.

A Model for Future Races

The Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2024 Classic has become a benchmark for athletics events in Kenya, blending elite competition, community development, and educational support. Its success strengthens Kenya’s profile on the international stage and sets a high standard for future races across the country.
