CS Murkomen, First Lady Visit Marakwet Landslide Victims, Pledge Support and Long-Term Solutions

Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, together with Cabinet colleagues Davis Chirchir (Roads) and Geoffrey Ruku (Public Service), joined First Lady H.E. Rachel Ruto on a visit to Chesongoch, Marakwet East, to console families affected by the recent devastating landslide.

During the visit, the team met with victims and community leaders to assess the immediate needs of those displaced or affected by the disaster, which has caused significant loss of property and disrupted livelihoods in the region.

“We are here to condole with the families affected by this tragic incident and to assess their urgent needs,” CS Murkomen said. “Our immediate focus is relief, but we are also committed to finding long-term solutions to prevent such recurring landslides.”

The delegation, accompanied by local leaders, engaged with residents to identify priority areas for intervention, including emergency shelter, food supplies, medical support, and psychosocial assistance for affected families.

CS Murkomen noted that the government would work closely with the Ministries of Roads, Public Service, and Disaster Management to implement mitigation measures, including proper drainage, slope stabilization, and resettlement where necessary.

“This disaster highlights the urgent need for coordinated action to safeguard communities prone to landslides,” Murkomen added. “We are committed to ensuring that the people of Marakwet East are protected and supported in both the short and long term.”

The visit underscores the government’s proactive approach to disaster response, combining immediate humanitarian relief with strategic planning to enhance resilience and reduce the risk of future incidents.

First Lady Rachel Ruto and the team assured residents that the government would continue monitoring the situation closely and provide ongoing support to help families recover and rebuild their lives.

Local authorities and community members welcomed the visit, expressing gratitude for the prompt engagement by national leaders during a period of grief and uncertainty.

This intervention forms part of the county and national government’s broader disaster management and response framework, aimed at protecting vulnerable communities across Kenya.
