Kawira Mwangaza Named Party Leader Months After Quitting Ruto's UDA

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been officially named the party leader of Umoja na Maendeleo Party, marking a significant political comeback just months after her controversial exit from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The announcement was made through a gazette notice dated Friday, July 4, and signed by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ann Nderitu. In the notice, the public was invited to submit any objections to the leadership changes within seven days of publication.

“Anyone with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall, within seven (7) days from the date of this publication, make their written submissions to the Registrar of Political Parties,” the notice read.

Mwangaza succeeds Charles Wambora Mugambi as the party's new leader. Also appointed was Victor Koome Mwangaza—believed to be a close associate and relative of the former governor—who takes over as deputy party leader, replacing Haron Shamala.

The move comes just three months after Mwangaza's highly publicized fallout with UDA, a party she had officially joined in April 2024—two years after being elected Meru governor as an independent candidate in the 2022 General Election.

Mwangaza's brief tenure within UDA was marred by political friction. She and her husband alleged that powerful figures within the ruling party orchestrated efforts to oust her from the Meru governorship. These tensions culminated in her departure from the party, which she accused of intolerance and internal sabotage.

When she joined UDA, Mwangaza had cited shared values such as inclusivity and national unity. She also pointed to persistent political attacks against her, attributing them partly to gender bias in leadership.

With her new role at the helm of Umoja na Maendeleo Party, Mwangaza is expected to reposition herself as a key player in Kenya’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election. She reiterated her commitment to grassroots development and the empowerment of the people of Meru.

“My political journey has always been anchored on service to the people. I remain committed to championing unity, inclusivity, and progress for our county and country,” Mwangaza said during a brief statement on Friday.

Political analysts say her appointment could breathe new life into the little-known Umoja na Maendeleo Party and offer her a fresh platform from which to mount a potential political comeback.

Mwangaza’s next steps—and whether she will seek re-election or aim for national office—are now closely watched by both allies and rivals within Kenya’s competitive political terrain.
