Newcastle Community Mourns Promising Kenyan Student Weeks Before Graduation
A wave of grief has swept through the Newcastle community following the untimely passing of Ms. June Chebet Kili, a Kenyan student whose life was tragically cut short just weeks before her anticipated graduation.
June passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2026, while receiving treatment at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Her death has left family, friends, fellow students, and the wider community devastated.
Originally from Kaboi, Eldoret, Kaboi, June was the beloved daughter of George Kili and Brenda Kili. She had been pursuing her studies at The University of Newcastle since 2024 and was eagerly looking forward to graduating on June 26, 2026—a milestone that would have marked the culmination of years of dedication and hard work.
Friends describe June as a bright, determined, and compassionate young woman whose presence touched many lives both within the university and the broader Newcastle community. Her passing has come as a profound shock to those who knew her and shared in her aspirations.
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, family, friends, and community members have come together in solidarity, gathering each evening for prayers and support at 1/58 Devon Street, Wallsend, NSW 2287.
Community leaders have extended their deepest sympathies to the Kili family, urging members of the public to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult period.
"June's dreams, kindness, and determination will remain an inspiration to all who knew her. Though her journey was tragically shortened, her impact on the lives she touched will never be forgotten," a community representative said.
As tributes continue to pour in from Australia, Kenya, and beyond, many are remembering a young woman whose future was filled with promise and potential.
Rest in Peace, June Chebet Kili.
