By Eve N Njeri
The country is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Cecilia Wanjiku, a Form Four student at Utumishi Girls High School in Gilgil, who is being remembered for her extraordinary bravery during a tragic dormitory fire.
According to accounts from survivors, Cecilia reportedly played a crucial role in helping several students escape the burning dormitory, repeatedly going back into the smoke-filled building to rescue her classmates. In the chaos of the inferno, she is said to have led others to safety before making a final desperate attempt to escape herself.
During the incident, Cecilia jumped from the engulfed dormitory structure in an effort to save her own life but sustained severe injuries, including a broken leg. She later succumbed to the effects of the fire and her injuries.
Her mother, Elizabeth Wanjiru, described the heartbreaking moment she arrived at the school, only to be informed that her daughter was missing. It was later that survivors revealed Cecilia’s actions inside the burning building.
“She was the one saving us… and when she finally tried to escape, she jumped and broke her leg,” one account from survivors shared with the family.
Cecilia, an only child described by relatives as bright and ambitious, had dreams of pursuing a career in medicine and surgery. Her death has left her family and community in deep grief, with many describing her as a symbol of courage and selflessness.
Her body was later identified at the Naivasha Hospital Mortuary as investigations into the fire continue.
As the Utumishi Girls community and the nation mourn, Cecilia Wanjiku is being remembered not only as a victim of tragedy, but as a young hero whose final actions saved lives.
