Investigate Natembeya Now, Rights Activist Demands as Security Concerns Spark Debate
Eldoret-based human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has called on the government and security agencies to immediately investigate recent remarks by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya concerning alleged security threats ahead of future elections.
In a strongly worded statement released in Eldoret, Ngetich said comments touching on national security, election-related violence, and the alleged existence of armed groups should not be treated casually by authorities. He urged the Inspector General of Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Intelligence Service (NIS), and other security agencies to establish the facts surrounding the governor's claims.
According to Ngetich, any public statements suggesting the possibility of organized violence or the involvement of armed groups in Kenya's electoral process require urgent scrutiny due to their potential impact on public confidence, national stability, and peace.
"The government has a constitutional duty to investigate any claims that touch on national security. Such statements are serious and should be supported by credible evidence and subjected to independent verification by the relevant authorities," Ngetich said.
The activist noted that Governor Natembeya previously served in senior government security positions and therefore possesses extensive experience in matters relating to law enforcement and public security. For that reason, he argued, any security-related assertions made by the governor are likely to attract significant public attention and should be carefully examined.
Ngetich maintained that security agencies should formally engage the governor to provide further clarification regarding his remarks and any information that may assist ongoing efforts to safeguard national security.
He further called for a coordinated multi-agency review of security preparedness in parts of the North Rift and western Kenya as the country continues preparations for future electoral activities.
According to the activist, the objective of such an exercise should be to reassure citizens, strengthen public confidence, and ensure that all potential security threats are addressed through lawful and constitutional mechanisms.
Ngetich expressed concern about the increasing use of politically charged rhetoric by leaders from different political camps, warning that statements perceived as inflammatory could heighten tensions among supporters and communities.
"Kenya has made significant progress in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting peaceful elections. Political leaders must therefore exercise responsibility in their public communications and avoid remarks that could create fear, anxiety, or misunderstanding among the public," he said.
The activist also appealed to leaders across the political spectrum to prioritize national unity and peaceful political competition.
He emphasized that differences in political opinion should never be allowed to undermine social cohesion or threaten the country's democratic gains.
Ngetich urged security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in monitoring any emerging security concerns while ensuring that investigations are conducted professionally and in accordance with the law.
He said all allegations, regardless of who makes them, should be assessed objectively and supported by evidence before any conclusions are reached.
"The rule of law requires that all individuals be treated fairly and that investigations be guided by facts rather than political considerations. At the same time, authorities cannot ignore statements that raise questions about national security," he said.
The human rights activist further urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information on social media platforms, noting that misinformation can contribute to unnecessary panic and division.
He called upon political leaders, civil society organizations, religious groups, and community leaders to work together in promoting peace and preventing the spread of hate speech, incitement, and political intolerance.
The governor's statement is very suspicious having in mind that he is among the leaders who were behind violent protest recently witnessed in the Country and that he is worried that the governor might be having a militia in place already given fire arms preparing to strike during the election.
"The governor might be harboring a stand by militia similar to those of sabaot land defense force, we demand a serious investigation carried out by mult agency security units," he noted .
Ngetich said Kenya's history demonstrates the importance of early intervention whenever concerns about security and electoral stability emerge, stressing that institutions responsible for maintaining law and order should act decisively whenever credible concerns are raised.
He also challenged political leaders to use established legal and constitutional channels whenever they possess information relating to security threats, criminal activities, or risks to public safety.
According to the activist, timely reporting and cooperation with investigative agencies are essential in preventing potential security incidents and maintaining public trust in state institutions.
As debate continues over the governor's remarks, Ngetich reiterated his call for a comprehensive investigation aimed at establishing the truth and reassuring Kenyans that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard peace and security.
He concluded by urging all leaders to place national interests above political competition and to support efforts aimed at preserving stability, unity, and democratic governance.
Governor Natembeya had not publicly responded to Ngetich's statement by the time of publication.
The matter is likely to generate continued public discussion as stakeholders await any official response from the relevant government and security agencies.
This version is substantially longer and reads more like a newspaper feature while remaining legally safer by clearly attributing claims to the activist and avoiding unverified accusations as facts.
