Barnaba Korir Hails Teamwork Behind Successful 5th Absa Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour Gold Label
The 5th Edition of the Absa Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour Gold Label was successfully staged on Saturday at Lobo Village in Eldoret, drawing elite athletes from across the globe and reaffirming Kenya’s reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance running.
In a comprehensive statement released after the event, Barnaba Korir, CEO and Meet Director of the Absa Sirikwa Classic Cross Country, expressed deep appreciation to the Government of Kenya, corporate sponsors, technical teams, athletes and fans whose collective effort ensured the event met international standards.
Korir first acknowledged the Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, for its continued commitment to athletics development and unwavering support for the Gold Label competition. He noted that the government’s backing has been pivotal in positioning the Sirikwa Classic as a premier fixture on the global cross country calendar.
He also conveyed gratitude to the Chief Guest, Interior Cabinet Secretary Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen, for gracing the occasion. Korir said the CS’s presence underscored the government’s recognition of sports as a unifying force and a key driver of youth empowerment and national pride.
The meet director singled out the event’s Title Sponsor, Absa Bank Kenya, for its strategic partnership and steadfast support over the years. He observed that Absa’s investment in athletics has not only strengthened the Sirikwa Classic but has also enhanced Kenya’s capacity to host world-class competitions that attract global attention.
Korir equally lauded Athletics Kenya for taking leadership in the organisation of the event, describing the federation’s stewardship as instrumental in maintaining the technical integrity and competitive standards expected of a World Cross Country Tour Gold Label meeting.
He further commended international sports marketing and event management firm Golazo for its outstanding professionalism, technical expertise and seamless coordination. According to Korir, Golazo’s experience in delivering high-calibre global events ensured smooth execution, from course design to race management and athlete services.
Special appreciation was extended to the extensive technical and operational teams that worked behind the scenes to deliver a flawless event. These included competition officials, course designers, timekeepers, judges, medical personnel, anti-doping teams, security agencies and volunteers. Korir noted that their dedication and precision guaranteed fairness, athlete safety and compliance with international regulations.
“To stage an event of this magnitude requires meticulous planning and collaboration across multiple sectors. The discipline and commitment demonstrated by every team member ensured that the Sirikwa Classic upheld its Gold Label standards,” he stated.
Korir also applauded the athletes — both local stars and international competitors — for their exceptional performances, discipline and sportsmanship. He said their participation continues to elevate the stature of the Sirikwa Classic within the World Cross Country Tour series and reinforces Kenya’s status as the spiritual home of distance running.
Beyond the competition itself, the event delivered significant economic and social benefits to Eldoret and its environs. Hotels, transport operators, vendors and local businesses recorded increased activity as fans and delegations thronged the athletics-rich region for the spectacle.
The media fraternity was equally recognised for providing comprehensive coverage that amplified the event’s reach both locally and internationally. Korir said the extensive broadcast and digital coverage ensured that millions of viewers around the world followed the races, further promoting Kenya as a premier sporting destination.
He concluded by thanking all stakeholders, partners, volunteers and fans who turned up in large numbers, noting that their enthusiasm and unwavering support were key to the success of the 5th edition.
“As we celebrate this milestone, we remain steadfast in upholding integrity in sport, promoting clean competition and strengthening Kenya’s standing as a global athletics powerhouse,” Korir said.
He reaffirmed the organising committee’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation to ensure future editions of the Absa Sirikwa Classic grow even bigger and more impactful on the international stage.
“Asanteni sana,” he added.
