Anti-narcotics detectives at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have apprehended a 26-year-old woman, Wendy Mbeke Muli, in a daring cocaine smuggling attempt. The trafficker, who had ingested pellets containing cocaine in a desperate attempt to evade detection, was arrested just minutes before her scheduled flight on June 13, 2025.
Mbeke, who appeared unusually confident despite her small carry-on luggage, became a prime suspect during a routine screening at the airport. Detectives noted her uneasy behaviour, which raised suspicions and prompted a more detailed search.
Suspicious Behaviour Leads to Discovery
At around 10:00 a.m., detectives decided to conduct a thorough search of the suspect, and the results were alarming. It was quickly discovered that Mbeke had concealed foreign substances inside her body cavity. The authorities immediately placed her under medical observation for safety and to prevent any harm from the ingested pellets.
Cocaine Pellets Excreted Under Observation
While under observation, Mbeke was allowed to use the washrooms, where she excreted two pellets. As the day went on, she continued to excrete more pellets, and by June 14, she had expelled a total of eight pellets. The pellets were recovered and found to contain approximately 626.65 grams of pure cocaine.
The anti-narcotics detectives who had been monitoring Mbeke's every move were able to confirm that the drugs were indeed concealed within her body, marking a sophisticated, yet ultimately unsuccessful, attempt at trafficking illicit substances through one of the busiest international airports in the country.
Imminent Arraignment
Mbeke is now facing serious charges related to drug trafficking and smuggling. She is scheduled to be arraigned in court tomorrow, June 16, 2025, where she will face the full force of the law for her attempt to smuggle cocaine out of the country. The authorities have stated that they will pursue a strong case against her to ensure that justice is served.
Ongoing Crackdown on Drug Trafficking
The arrest of Wendy Mbeke Muli serves as yet another reminder of the vigilance and determination of Kenya’s anti-narcotics agencies in the fight against drug trafficking. The authorities continue to intensify efforts to clamp down on the illegal drug trade, particularly at JKIA, which has been a hotspot for drug trafficking attempts.
The seizure of 626 grams of cocaine is part of a broader effort to safeguard Kenya’s borders from drug smuggling, with law enforcement agencies continuing to monitor airports, seaports, and border entry points closely.
A Call for Public Vigilance
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, particularly at points of entry into the country, in an effort to curb the rising tide of drug trafficking.
“The war on drugs is far from over, and our commitment to keeping Kenya free from illegal narcotics remains unwavering. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who seek to harm our society with illegal substances are brought to justice,” said a senior anti-narcotics officer at JKIA.
