Rigathi Gachagua: Sovereign Power Lies with the People of Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reiterated the importance of the sovereignty of the people as enshrined in Article 1 of the Kenyan Constitution, emphasizing that the true power in Kenya lies with its citizens and not with any individual, leader, or institution. Speaking at a public gathering in Mukinduri Shopping Centre, Kirinyaga Central Constituency, Gachagua affirmed the role of the people in shaping Kenya’s democracy and securing their fundamental rights.

Sovereign Power Resides with the People

Gachagua underscored that the Constitution clearly declares the people as the ultimate bearers of sovereign power, enabling them to directly exercise their will in the governance of the nation. He emphasized that no leader, institution, or authority could claim the right to obstruct or deny the people their right to participate in democratic processes.

“The Kenyan Constitution is clear — sovereign power belongs to the people. It is the people of this nation who hold the ultimate authority, and they are the ones who should have the power to decide their future,” Gachagua stated. “No leader, no individual, and no authority can block or deny the people their right to express their will, as democracy is the voice of the people.”

A Call to Uphold Democracy

The former Deputy President’s comments were particularly focused on reminding the people of Kenya that democracy is not just a system of government but a collective effort where every citizen’s voice matters. He stressed that change, progress, and justice come through the active participation of the people and their collective will.

“Democracy is the voice of the people. When the people speak, leaders must listen. It is through this collective voice that change, progress, and justice are achieved,” Gachagua added, urging Kenyans to continue advocating for their rights and ensuring their voices are heard in the political process.

Commitment to Protecting People's Rights

In the wake of increasing political tension, Gachagua reassured the residents of Mukinduri and all Kenyans that he would continue to champion the cause of the people, fighting to protect their rights and ensure their sovereignty is never compromised. His remarks come at a time when political elites have been accused of undermining the will of the people in various instances.

“As a leader, I stand with the people. I stand with those who believe that Kenya is a democracy where the people’s will cannot be dismissed,” Gachagua affirmed. “I will continue to speak up and advocate for the rights of ordinary Kenyans, as they are the true custodians of the country's destiny.”

Looking Ahead to Future Leadership

Gachagua’s call to uphold the sovereignty of the people aligns with his broader political vision, where he promises to work towards an inclusive, people-centered governance structure if given the chance to lead. His remarks in Kirinyaga resonate with many citizens who feel that their voices have been sidelined in the corridors of power.

“We must ensure that leadership always answers to the people, and not the other way around,” he concluded. “Kenya belongs to its people, and their power must never be denied. The future of this nation lies in the hands of its citizens, and together, we can make it brighter for all.”
