The sixth edition of the Absa Kip Keino Classic took center stage today at the Ulinzi Stars Sports Complex in Lang’ata, Nairobi, delivering a thrilling spectacle of world-class athletics and national pride.

Originally slated for Nyayo National Stadium, the event was relocated due to ongoing renovations. Despite the change in venue, the Kip Keino Classic—part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold Series—lived up to its reputation, showcasing top-tier talent and electric performances from around the globe.

Kenyan Heroes Steal the Spotlight

Kenya’s own Wiseman Were and Mary Moraa were among the day’s standout stars, earning thunderous cheers from home fans. Their impressive victories in the sprints and middle-distance events, respectively, reaffirmed Kenya’s place as an athletics powerhouse.

“We came to compete, and we came to win. It’s always an honour to perform in front of our home crowd,” said Mary Moraa, who dominated the women’s 800m event with signature flair.

International Excellence on Display

The event also attracted elite athletes from across continents, with particularly memorable performances in the field events. Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio da Silva broke the meet record in the javelin throw, stunning the crowd and securing his qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Championships.

Track, Field, and Global Attention

From sprints to long-distance events, hurdles to throws, the Kip Keino Classic offered a full range of disciplines. Live coverage began at 6:00 PM local time, with international broadcasters carrying the excitement to global audiences.

The event continues to grow in stature, not just as a sporting contest, but as a platform that bridges local talent with international excellence.

A True Celebration of Athletics

Despite the last-minute venue shift, the Ulinzi Stars Sports Complex rose to the occasion, providing an excellent setting for competition and celebration.

“This is more than a meet—it’s a movement. The Kip Keino Classic is where legacies are built,” said one athletics official.
