Natembeya Calls for Unified Western Bloc as Raila Champions Luo Interests

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has called on residents of the larger Western Kenya region to unite under a common political and economic agenda, echoing sentiments that the region must establish a strong voice at the national table.

Speaking on Madaraka Day in Homa Bay, where he joined President William Ruto and other dignitaries for the national celebrations, Natembeya praised the people of Luo Nyanza for rallying behind one of their own — The Right Honorable Raila Odinga — who, he said, has consistently negotiated for his region's interests with clarity and boldness.

“My Western people,” Natembeya said during an interview after the event, “we must ask ourselves a very honest question: Who is speaking for us? Who represents our dreams and our demands when decisions are being made in Nairobi?”

The governor noted that while Western Kenya remains rich in resources, culture, and potential, it has historically been fragmented in its political voice — a weakness that has seen the region sidelined in key national conversations.

“What Luo Nyanza has done, rallying behind one trusted leader, is something we must learn from. Raila Odinga has been their voice — and whether in opposition or now as an African Union nominee, he still speaks for their people,” Natembeya said.

He stressed the need for the Mulembe Nation — comprising counties such as Bungoma, Vihiga, Busia, Kakamega, and Trans Nzoia — to reflect deeply on the future. “Unity isn’t just a slogan,” he warned. “It must be a strategy.”

Natembeya, a rising political figure in the region, has in recent months intensified efforts to consolidate support across the Western bloc, holding consultative forums with leaders, youth, clergy, and business people. Observers see this as a possible foundation for the creation of a unified Western political and economic caucus.

He emphasized that the call was not about tribalism but about representation and fairness.

“Development doesn’t come to those who sit on the fence,” he said. “It comes to those who organize, who mobilize, and who speak in one voice.”

As the 2027 political calendar begins to take shape, Natembeya's remarks are likely to ignite conversations around leadership, unity, and the future direction of the Western region in national politics.
