‘Mbogi Green ya Wareng’ Launched to Boost Forest Restoration Efforts in Kenya

In a major boost to Kenya’s forest restoration drive, stakeholders gathered at Wareng High School today for the official launch of Mbogi Green ya Wareng, a grassroots tree-planting and environmental conservation initiative aimed at contributing to the national goal of planting 15 billion trees.

The event was graced by Environment Cabinet Secretary Hon. Barasa Mulongo, climate champion Charlene Ruto, and Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, among other dignitaries and local leaders. The program is led by the SMACHS, Chandaria, and Chelilim Foundations, which are partnering to support reforestation and community-led conservation efforts across the region.

Speaking during the launch, Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea highlighted the symbolic significance of holding the event at Wareng High School, the alma mater of President William Ruto. “This initiative reflects not only our environmental commitment but also honours the President’s vision for a greener, more sustainable Kenya,” he said.

Cabinet Secretary Mulongo praised the collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, noting that such initiatives are critical in achieving Kenya’s ambitious climate and biodiversity targets. “This is about restoring our forests, yes—but it’s also about restoring our relationship with nature,” he remarked.

The launch included a ceremonial tree planting exercise involving students, government officials, and community members. Organizers said the initiative aims to engage youth and local communities in environmental action and education.

Charlene Ruto, a prominent voice in youth-led climate activism, urged students to take the lead in shaping the future of the planet. “The future is green, and it starts with you. Planting a tree is planting hope,” she said.

Mbogi Green ya Wareng is expected to support long-term tree planting campaigns, environmental awareness programs, and school greening projects across Uasin Gishu County and beyond.

As Kenya intensifies its efforts to address climate change and biodiversity loss, the initiative is seen as a significant step toward localizing national policies and igniting grassroots participation in environmental conservation.
