The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced plans to conduct a major online auction of uncollected goods stored at the Customs Warehouse at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The auction, aimed at clearing a significant backlog of abandoned items, is scheduled to run from July 28 to August 1, 2025, through the KRA's official online portal.
In a gazette notice issued this week, the KRA warned that unless the goods are claimed within 30 days from the notice date, they will be considered abandoned and sold in accordance with Section 42 of the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA), 2004.
“Notice is given that unless the under-mentioned goods are entered and removed from the custody of the Customs Warehouse Keeper, Forodha JKIA, within thirty (30) days... they will be treated as abandoned and will be disposed of,” the gazette notice read.
The auction will feature a wide range of goods including:
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Electronics
- Books
- Personal belongings
- Mixed and miscellaneous items
Interested buyers will have the opportunity to inspect the items physically at the JKIA Customs Warehouse between July 24 and July 25, 2025, during official working hours, ahead of the online bidding.
The KRA reiterated that the disposal process is standard procedure for goods left unclaimed for extended periods. The agency emphasized that the auction is not only a means to recover space but also to recoup public revenue lost due to uncollected imports.
“Importers and consignees are advised to ensure timely clearance of their goods to avoid loss through auction,” the KRA said in a separate statement.
This is part of the KRA’s broader push to improve efficiency at entry points and prevent congestion in customs warehouses. Previous auctions by the authority have attracted widespread interest from individual buyers, traders, and companies seeking bargain deals on a variety of items.
