The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of a possible surge in respiratory illnesses across Nairobi County and the highland areas east of the Rift Valley, as the country enters its cold season.
In a statement issued on Saturday, May 31, the Department’s Director David Gikungu cautioned that the cold weather expected in the coming three months may lead to an outbreak of illnesses such as asthma, pneumonia, influenza, and the common cold.
“Respiratory diseases like asthma, pneumonia, flu, and the common cold are likely to increase over Nairobi County and the highland east of the Rift Valley due to the expected cold conditions,” said Gikungu.
The Met Department urged residents to adhere to health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and avoid risky behavior such as using charcoal jikos in poorly ventilated rooms, which poses a serious carbon monoxide poisoning risk.
Malaria Risk Along the Coast, Eye Infections in the North
Beyond respiratory threats, the department also warned of a possible increase in malaria cases along the Coastal region, as warmer and wetter conditions could facilitate mosquito breeding.
In northeastern Kenya, where dry and windy conditions are forecasted, residents may face a rise in eye infections and respiratory complications, the advisory added.
Flood and Lightning Risk in Western Kenya
The forecast also shows a heightened risk of flooding around Lake Victoria and lightning strikes in the highland regions west of the Rift Valley. The public has been urged to exercise caution:
- Avoid driving through flooded roads.
- Do not shelter under trees or near metallic structures during storms.
Health Sector Urged to Prepare
In response to the health threats, the Meteorological Department has called on relevant health authorities to preposition medical supplies and distribute insecticide-treated nets in high-risk areas to prevent outbreaks.
The public is advised to dress warmly, seek medical attention promptly when unwell, and stay informed through official weather and health updates.
