By John Kariuki

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano EGH has led Kenya to a major diplomatic victory after successfully steering the country’s election to the United Nations Tourism Executive Council for the 2025–2029 term.

The election, which was highly competitive, marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s quest to cement its position as a global leader in sustainable and inclusive tourism. CS Miano’s focused diplomacy and strategic engagements have been credited for delivering this hard-fought win.

“This is not just a Kenyan victory; it is a recognition of our leadership in shaping global tourism priorities. Kenya’s voice will now be central in championing sustainable, community-centered tourism on the world stage,” said CS Miano.

The UN Tourism Executive Council, which ranks second only to the General Assembly, is a powerful organ responsible for ratifying key decisions and shaping the operational agenda of the global tourism sector. Kenya’s seat at the council signals growing international confidence in the country's leadership and tourism potential.

CS Miano emphasized that Kenya will use this platform to push for policies that empower local communities, promote climate-resilient tourism, and drive regional integration.

“We are committed to advancing a tourism agenda that prioritizes inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity. Kenya will advocate for policies that uplift small tourism players, safeguard our natural heritage, and enhance Africa’s voice in global tourism governance,” she said.

The Cabinet Secretary further noted that the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is working tirelessly to reposition Kenya as a top global destination, with a strong focus on diversifying tourism products and embracing green tourism models.

Kenya’s election comes at a time when the country is scaling up its efforts to tap into emerging tourism markets, strengthen cultural heritage tourism, and build resilient tourism infrastructure.

CS Miano’s leadership is expected to drive Kenya’s influence in shaping global tourism policies, positioning the country as a key player in defining the future of international travel and sustainable development.
