Governor Barasa Inspects KISIP II Progress in Amalemba Informal Settlements

H.E. Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa this evening led an inspection tour of ongoing development works under the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Program Phase II (KISIP II) in Amalemba and Kambi Somali areas, Shirere Ward, Lurambi Sub-county.

The Governor’s visit comes as part of his administration’s commitment to transforming informal settlements through targeted infrastructure development aimed at improving quality of life, boosting safety, and stimulating local economic activity.

Key among the projects inspected were the newly constructed Amina-Salim and Abdi-Mnewa streets, which form part of a broader effort by the County Government of Kakamega to modernize infrastructure in underserved urban areas.

Under KISIP II, critical works include upgrading roads to bitumen standards, installing efficient drainage systems, expanding access to clean water, constructing pedestrian walkways, and installing modern street lighting.

“These interventions are not just about roads and lights,” said Governor Barasa. “They’re about dignity, opportunity, and ensuring that every resident of Kakamega, regardless of their neighborhood, has access to a clean, safe, and economically viable environment.”

The Ksh116.4 million project is being implemented through a collaborative partnership between the French Development Agency (FDA) and the County Government of Kakamega.

The Governor was accompanied by a delegation of senior county officials, including Majority Leader CPA Philip Maina, CECM for Roads Patrick Kundu, CECM for Urban Development Angela Silima Muchai, Chief Officer Shakir Dahir Adan, and Kakamega Municipality Manager Violet Ofisi, among others.

With works steadily progressing, residents of Amalemba and Kambi Somali are optimistic that the upgraded infrastructure will not only ease mobility but also improve sanitation and enhance security, especially for women and children.

Governor Barasa emphasized the County’s resolve to continue prioritizing investments that close development gaps in informal settlements, in line with the county’s Vision 2030 urban development agenda.
