DCP Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala Claims His Driver Was Brutally Assaulted by Police

By Victor Maiyo

Cleophas Malala, the Deputy Leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has come forward with  allegations that his personal driver was viciously assaulted over the weekend.

In a detailed account accompanied by graphic images, the former Kakamega Senator claimed that his driver was attacked by the Kakamega Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) along with three other officers. Malala said the officers had been following his official car, and upon realizing he was not inside, they turned their attention to the driver.

Malala alleged that the officers forced the vehicle to a stop and demanded that the driver exit. When he refused to comply with orders to drive to an undisclosed location, they reportedly beat him using a gun. After the assault, he was taken into custody and held for hours at the Kakamega Central Police Station.

Eventually, the injured driver was moved to Kakamega General Hospital, according to Malala, but not before the officers attempted to erase photos from the driver’s phone in an apparent effort to destroy evidence unsuccessfully.

"The Kakamega OCPD and three other uniformed officers trailed my vehicle and forced my driver to stop. Disappointingly, upon confirming I was not on board, they commanded him to drive to an unknown destination. When he refused, they assaulted him so severely using a gun pointer that he was left profusely bleeding." Malala said.

"Instead of permitting medical aid, they detained him at Kakamega Central Police Station for hours. Only after this unlawful detention was he escorted by armed officers to Kakamega General Hospital for treatment. Shockingly, they attempted to destroy pictorial evidence on his phone a crude attempt to conceal their actions, to no avail." He further narrated.

The images shared online showed the driver with visible injuries, including a bleeding forehead. His attire a grey suit jacket and a torn black shirt was stained with blood, capturing the violent nature of the alleged incident.

Malala strongly condemned the attack and confirmed that he had taken the matter to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) for further scrutiny and possible action.

"This is unconscionable brutality by those sworn to protect us. Our nation sinks deeper into lawlessness when officers become perpetrators. We will not be intimidated ,we are formally filing a complaint with IPOA,"he declared.

He did not disclose why the officers were pursuing his vehicle, suggesting that no clear justification was offered for the actions taken by the authorities.
