Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has called for collaborative leadership, continuous consultation, and active engagement with grassroots leaders to effectively deliver on the government's development agenda. She emphasized that the leadership of His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto is firmly anchored in embracing diverse ideologies, inclusive participation, and teamwork across all levels of governance.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with elected leaders from Kilifi County, CS Miano underscored the need for joint efforts to resolve pressing challenges facing local communities. She was joined by her Cabinet colleague from the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy, Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, as they engaged leaders on key issues affecting the coastal region.
Among those present at the meeting were Kilifi County MP Hon. Gertrude Mbeyu, Malindi MP Hon. Amina Mnyazi, Ganze MP Hon. Kenneth Kazungu, and Kaloleni MP Hon. Paul Katana. The leaders raised serious concerns about the escalating cases of human-wildlife conflicts across Kilifi County, which have led to the destruction of property, injuries, and in some instances, tragic loss of life.
CS Miano acknowledged the gravity of the situation and reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to providing sustainable solutions to the problem. She announced that the Kenya Wildlife Service has been tasked with enhancing human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategies, particularly in Kilifi and other coastal regions.
“My ministry is fully dedicated to firmly addressing the challenges of human-wildlife conflict. I have directed KWS to intensify interventions aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence between communities and wildlife,” CS Miano said.
She further revealed that compensation for affected families is already underway, with over 60 million shillings set to be disbursed to human-wildlife conflict claimants in Kilifi County before the end of the month.
“This compensation is part of our broader effort to alleviate the suffering of our people and to restore their livelihoods,” she assured the leaders.
CS Miano emphasized the need for continuous collaboration with local leaders and communities, noting that inclusive leadership is critical in delivering lasting solutions and driving national progress.
She concluded by reaffirming the government's resolve to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the safety, prosperity, and dignity of every Kenyan.
