The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of a police officer who was captured on video shooting an unarmed civilian with an anti-riot shotgun during Monday’s demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
In a statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General, the NPS said it was deeply concerned by the incident and affirmed that swift disciplinary and legal action had been taken.
“The Inspector General, National Police Service, ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the involved officer,” the statement read.
The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rushed to hospital and is currently receiving medical attention. His condition remains unclear.
The shooting sparked widespread outrage across social media, with Kenyans demanding accountability from the police and justice for the victim. Civil society groups and political leaders have also called for a comprehensive review of police conduct during protests.
While confirming the arrest, the NPS also pointed to the presence of armed individuals within the protest crowd, whom they referred to as "goons" wielding crude weapons. The police condemned the criminal elements and reiterated their intent to take firm legal action against anyone involved in unlawful acts.
“Investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly,” the NPS added.
The incident has intensified the national conversation around police brutality and the state’s handling of public dissent. It follows a string of recent allegations against security forces, including the controversial killing of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’, which has galvanized Kenya’s Gen Z activists to organize mass protests demanding justice and reform.
