Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has delivered a powerful and emotional statement following the fatal shooting of a protester during demonstrations in Nairobi, calling for immediate justice and accountability from law enforcement.
Addressing mourners, demonstrators, and fellow leaders, Owino said the country is "united by grief, anger, and a burning desire to search for justice." He condemned the incident as part of a larger, troubling trend of police brutality against Kenya’s youth.
"What happened was not an isolated incident," Owino said. "It was part of a pattern—one where the lives of young people are too often treated as expendable."
The legislator emphasized that the protests are rooted in values, not violence. "We protest because we believe in dignity. We march because we believe in accountability. And we speak because we believe that the truth must be heard, no matter how uncomfortable it may be."
Responding to critics who have called for patience and more facts, Owino was unequivocal: "The fact is that a young man is shot. The fact is that demonstrations should not end in death. The fact is that those sworn to protect and serve must be held to a higher standard—not a lower one."
He further demanded that the officer responsible for the shooting be charged with murder, asserting that justice must be pursued with urgency and transparency.
"We will remember. We will speak. We will march. And we will not stop until justice is not the exception, but the rule," he concluded.
Owino's remarks have amplified growing national outrage as Gen Z-led protests continue across the country, with calls for police accountability, systemic reforms, and an end to what many see as a culture of impunity within the security forces.
Human rights groups and civil society leaders have echoed his sentiments, urging the government to take swift legal action and to ensure the right to peaceful assembly is respected.
