Ann Nderitu’s Appointment to IEBC Marks a New Era of Credibility and Political Discipline

The National Assembly has approved Ann Njeri Nderitu as one of the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioners, a move widely hailed as a boost to the credibility and professionalism of Kenya’s electoral body.

Nderitu, who has served as the Registrar of Political Parties since 2018, emerged as a standout nominee during the vetting process conducted by the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC). Her deep experience in overseeing political party compliance, championing transparency, and enforcing legal frameworks has positioned her as a trusted authority on matters of political governance in Kenya.

Under her stewardship, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties transformed into a proactive institution, promoting internal party democracy, accountability, and gender inclusivity. Her tenure also saw the successful implementation of digital party membership systems and enhanced oversight on the disbursement and use of political party funds.

JLAC, chaired by Tharaka MP Hon. George Murugara, vetted and approved a total of seven nominees for the IEBC. The newly appointed commissioners are Erastus Edung Ethekon (Chairperson), Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Prof. Francis Odhiambo Aduol and Fahima Araphat Abdallah.

However, Nderitu’s appointment has attracted the most attention given her proven commitment to electoral fairness and non-partisanship in the often politically volatile environment of party politics.

“The experience and credibility Madam Ann brings will help restore confidence in the Commission,” said Rarieda MP Hon. Otiende Amollo, a member of JLAC. “She has already demonstrated a firm grasp of the legal and institutional frameworks that govern Kenya’s democracy.”

With her entry into the IEBC, Nderitu is expected to play a critical role in guiding the reformed Commission ahead of the 2027 General Election particularly in strengthening voter registration, enhancing public trust, and ensuring political neutrality.

Her appointment reflects JLAC’s commitment to merit-based selection, gender balance, and institutional renewal. It also signals a national resolve to ensure the IEBC functions independently, efficiently, and fairly.

As Kenya turns the page toward electoral reforms and readiness, Ann Nderitu’s entry into the IEBC symbolizes hope for a more accountable and democratic future.
