Moisbridge Ward MCA Patrick Kimeli Warns Youth: “Your Social Media Could Cost You a Visa”

Moisbridge Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Patrick Kimeli, has cautioned young people against reckless use of social media, warning that inappropriate online behavior could have serious consequences—including visa denials.

Speaking during a youth mentorship forum in Moisbridge, the MCA said the world has changed, and embassies now review applicants’ digital footprints before issuing visas.

“We are in a new world order. Your social media can now determine whether you get a visa or not,” Kimeli said. “If you constantly post indecent videos, pictures, insults, or engage in online abuse, don’t be surprised when your visa application is denied.”

Kimeli urged the youth to treat their online presence as an extension of their identity and character, encouraging them to post responsibly and use social platforms for learning, networking, and personal growth.

“Your timeline is your digital CV. Let it reflect maturity, vision, and responsibility,” he said. “Governments, employers, and scholarship boards are watching. Don’t let a few careless posts ruin your chances.”

He further advised local schools, churches, and community leaders to invest in digital literacy programs, noting that the internet can be a tool for transformation or destruction—depending on how it's used.

Kimeli’s remarks come amid growing global emphasis on online behaviour in visa and job vetting processes, with more institutions reviewing applicants' public profiles before making key decisions.

“Be wise,” Kimeli concluded. “What you post today can either open doors tomorrow—or close them forever.”
