Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has stepped up his grassroots empowerment campaign, delivering a major boost to youth-led enterprises by donating tents and plastic chairs to bodaboda groups in West Bukusu Ward, Bumula Sub-county.
In a ceremony held at his Kamukuywa residence, Governor Lusaka handed over 100 plastic chairs to the Namuninge Bodaboda group and a large 100-seater tent to the Mwomo Bodaboda group. Several other groups in the area also received similar equipment aimed at helping them diversify their income streams.
“This initiative is part of my ongoing commitment to empower our youth and support small enterprises at the grassroots level,” Lusaka said. “We want our young people to grow economically and have sustainable livelihoods.”
The governor emphasized that with many young people relying on the bodaboda business for their daily income, offering tools that allow them to branch into event services and community functions is a strategic step toward financial independence.
The beneficiaries welcomed the move with gratitude, noting that the tents and chairs will enable them to earn additional income by renting them out for weddings, funerals, church events, and other local gatherings.
“This is a game-changer for us,” said James Wamalwa, a member of the Namuninge Bodaboda group. “We can now supplement our transport business with event rentals and improve our savings.”
Residents and local leaders praised the governor’s targeted empowerment approach, saying it reflects a deeper understanding of the needs and potential of community-based groups.
Governor Lusaka affirmed that similar initiatives will be rolled out across other wards in Bungoma County, especially where youth unemployment remains high.
“This is only the beginning. We will continue to support our youth with practical tools and resources that drive real economic change,” he said.
