Human Rights Group Calls for Speedy Investigation into Attack on Vihiga Senator

An Eldoret-based human rights activist, Kipkorir Ngetich, has strongly condemned the recent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, terming it a shocking and unacceptable act of violence that undermines the safety of public leaders and ordinary citizens alike.

Speaking on behalf of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, Ngetich said the incident raises serious concerns about security and the growing trend of politically charged narratives surrounding criminal acts. He emphasized that no Kenyan—regardless of political affiliation or social standing—should be subjected to violence, humiliation, or intimidation.

“The attack on Senator Osotsi is deeply regrettable and unacceptable in a democratic society like ours,” Ngetich stated. “We must not allow such incidents to be used as tools for political propaganda or division.”

He urged members of the political class to exercise restraint and responsibility, warning against the premature politicization of the matter. According to Ngetich, attempts by some leaders to link the attack to internal disputes within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are speculative and risk derailing the course of justice.

“It is both irresponsible and misleading for politicians to rush to conclusions and assign blame without evidence,” he said. “The focus should now shift to allowing the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to carry out a comprehensive, professional, and independent investigation.”

Ngetich also questioned the circumstances under which the senator was attacked, pointing out what he described as unusual security lapses. He noted that it is rare for a public official of such high rank to move alone without close protection.

“It is important for investigators to establish critical facts,” he added. “When did the senator arrive at the location? Why was he reportedly alone without his security officer, driver, personal assistant, or close associates? These are legitimate questions that must be answered to give Kenyans a clear understanding of what transpired.”

The human rights activist stressed that uncovering the full truth is essential not only for justice but also for restoring public confidence in security institutions.

At the same time, Ngetich called on residents of Vihiga and Kisumu counties to remain calm, peaceful, and united in the wake of the incident. He cautioned against attempts by certain political actors to exploit the situation to incite ethnic divisions or unrest.

“We urge citizens not to fall into the trap of divisive politics,” he said. “Kenyans must continue to coexist peacefully and reject any efforts to polarize communities along ethnic or political lines.”

Ngetich further commended the government for the swift arrest of a suspect in connection with the attack, describing it as a positive step toward accountability. However, he emphasized that the investigation must go beyond arrests and ensure that all individuals involved—directly or indirectly—are brought to justice.

He also issued a strong warning against the formation of criminal gangs and vigilante groups, noting that such entities pose a serious threat to national stability. Additionally, he called for firm action against politicians who incite violence or spread inflammatory rhetoric.

“Any leader found inciting citizens or promoting hostility between communities must face the full force of the law,” he said. “Kenya is governed by the rule of law, and no one is above it.”

Ngetich reiterated that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to protection and justice, and that these principles must be upheld without exception. He urged all Kenyans to support law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could aid in the investigation.

He also criticized what he termed as a growing culture among some politicians of misleading the public through unverified claims, including allegations that the government was behind the attack.

“Such claims are not only baseless but also dangerous,” Ngetich said. “They are designed to whip up emotions and create unnecessary tension among wananchi.”

With the country gradually heading toward the next general election, Ngetich warned that some politicians may resort to “dirty tactics” to gain political mileage. He urged leaders to act with integrity and responsibility, reminding them that political power is temporary.

“Those in opposition today may find themselves in government tomorrow, and vice versa,” he noted. “It is therefore important to build a culture of accountability, truth, and respect for institutions.”

He concluded by calling for a full-scale, transparent, and speedy investigation into the attack on Senator Osotsi, emphasizing that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.

“As a nation, we must respect due process and allow investigative agencies to do their work without interference,” Ngetich said. “Only then can we uncover the truth and ensure that justice prevails.”
