Kenya’s Wildlife Sector Records Major Milestones Under Rebecca Miano's Leadership

The State Department for Wildlife, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, EGH, has reported remarkable progress over the past year in strengthening wildlife conservation, improving human-wildlife coexistence, and enhancing community empowerment.

Among the key achievements is the installation of over 300 kilometers of electric fencing, a major step toward reducing Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC). This initiative aims to protect both communities and wildlife by minimizing destructive encounters and fostering peaceful coexistence.

To support victims of HWC, the government has disbursed more than Ksh 2.8 billion in compensation, restoring dignity and livelihoods to affected families. Additionally, a new digital claims system has been launched to streamline and expedite compensation, making it more transparent and efficient.

In a move to boost efficiency and accountability, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has digitized its revenue collection system, resulting in an increase of over Ksh 2.3 million in revenue.

Security and protection within Kenya’s national parks and reserves have also been significantly enhanced with the recruitment of over 1,200 rangers and 100 cadets. These personnel will strengthen the country's anti-poaching efforts and ensure the safety of wildlife and tourists alike.

On the academic and scientific front, the Wildlife Research Training Institute is now fully operational and is set to host the 2nd International Wildlife Scientific Conference in September 2025, solidifying Kenya’s role as a hub for conservation research and knowledge exchange.

Community engagement remains a cornerstone of the department’s strategy, with increased support for community conservancies. Initiatives include training programs, infrastructure development, and economic empowerment projects such as beekeeping and beadwork, creating alternative livelihoods and deepening community commitment to conservation.

CS Miano affirmed the government's dedication to building a resilient wildlife sector, stating, “These achievements are not just milestones; they are a promise to future generations that Kenya’s rich biodiversity will thrive through innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration.”

The department’s progress marks a significant stride in positioning Kenya as a global leader in sustainable wildlife conservation.
