Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially unveiled his new political party, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), marking his return to the political stage after months of speculation.
Speaking at the DCP headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, Gachagua revealed that the formation of the party followed six months of extensive consultations at his home, during which he engaged various stakeholders across the country.
"The people of Kenya have spoken clearly. They want a government that listens and truly represents them. DCP is the answer to that call — a government by the people and for the people," he declared.
The party’s slogan, "Skiza Wakenya" (Swahili for Listen to Kenyans), underscores its commitment to public participation and citizen-driven leadership. The party’s symbol — a hand holding an ear — reinforces this theme of attentiveness to public concerns. The DCP colors are green, red, white, and black.
Gachagua emphasized that DCP will remain inclusive and free from personality cults, stating that it will not endorse any preferred candidates. He also highlighted the party’s focus on national unity and inclusivity, noting the involvement of youth, including members of Gen Z.
In a show of organizational readiness, the DCP unveiled its interim leadership:
-
Cleophas Malala – Deputy Party Leader
-
David Mingati – Party Chairperson
-
Mithika Linturi – National Organizing Secretary
-
Cate Waruguru – National Women’s Leader
-
Peter Mwathi – Deputy Chairperson for Strategy
-
Hesbon Obanga – Secretary General
-
Hannah Mutua – Treasurer
-
Andrew Kiplimo Muge – Director of Elections
-
Maina Kamanda – Chairperson of the Council of Eminent Persons
-
Alex Khamasi – National Coordinator for Counties
-
Mercy Gakuya – Secretary for Education
-
Hussein Athmani – Secretary for Tourism
-
John Maraga – Representative for Persons with Disabilities
Gachagua announced that the official launch of DCP is scheduled for June 4, 2025, after which he will embark on a two-year national tour to mobilize support and connect with voters across the country.
The move comes amid shifting political alliances and increasing tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with some analysts suggesting that the formation of DCP could reshape the opposition landscape and challenge President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
