In a move aimed at strengthening democratic values within learning institutions, The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) has partnered with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to oversee its upcoming student elections scheduled for May.
The partnership was officially unveiled during a sensitization forum held at the institution, where IEBC officials engaged student leaders, electoral commissioners, and observers in a detailed briefing on electoral integrity, transparency, and peaceful participation.
Speaking at the event, IEBC Kesses Returning Officer Mr. Chenger emphasized the importance of integrity in the electoral process, urging student election officials to carry out their roles independently and fairly.
“Once appointed as a commissioner, you are the highest authority in the electoral system within the institution. Your decisions must be guided by integrity, impartiality, and a commitment to fairness,” said Mr. Chenger.
His sentiments were echoed by Kesses Deputy IEBC Commissioner Mr. Paul Rono, who pledged logistical support from the Commission. “We will walk with you through the entire process. From voting materials to technical support, the IEBC is committed to ensuring that this election meets national standards of transparency and credibility,” he said.
The institution has also proposed hosting a student debate to foster issue-based campaigns and informed voting. IEBC officials welcomed the initiative and offered to help facilitate the debate, highlighting its importance in nurturing a mature and responsible leadership culture among the youth.
TENP’s move to collaborate with the IEBC is part of a broader trend where institutions of higher learning are embracing formal electoral procedures to instill leadership accountability and civic responsibility among students.
The upcoming elections are expected to be a litmus test for the institution’s commitment to fostering a culture of democratic participation, with both TENP and IEBC officials expressing confidence in a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
