KNQA CEO Dr. Alice Kande Opens South Rift RPL Training Workshop on Behalf of PS Dr. Esther Muoria

By John Kariuki

The CEO of the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), Dr. Alice Kande, this week officially opened a high-impact training workshop on the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for institutions and industry players from the South Rift Region. Dr. Kande represented Dr. Esther Muoria, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), during the event.

Held at Kericho Township Technical and Vocational College, the workshop brought together principals and trainers from 19 TVET institutions alongside key industry stakeholders. These participants will play a critical role in the roll-out and assessment processes of RPL in the region.

The training is part of a nationwide initiative being implemented concurrently across the country. It is designed to build institutional and industry capacity for the effective delivery of RPL, a cornerstone in the government’s strategy to formalize the informal sector, which currently employs over 15 million Kenyans with essential yet uncertified skills.

KNQA, in partnership with the RPL Delivery Unit under the State Department for TVET, is leading the charge in implementing RPL as part of the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF). This transformative program provides a flexible and inclusive pathway for individuals to obtain formal recognition of their competencies through full or partial qualifications based on their prior learning, experience, and demonstrated skills.

RPL is expected to significantly promote decent employment, particularly among the youth, and advance the goals of lifelong learning, productivity, and social inclusion.

In remarks delivered on her behalf, PS Dr. Muoria commended all stakeholders for their continued support and dedication to the success of the RPL framework. She urged them to uphold diligence, collaboration, and innovation to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of RPL efforts across the country.
