Illicit Alcohol Seized in Major Crackdown in Kakamega

In a renewed effort to combat the spread of illegal alcohol, the National Police Service (NPS) has conducted a major crackdown in Kakamega County, seizing large quantities of illicit brews and arresting one suspect.

During the early-morning operation, police officers confiscated approximately 2,250 litres of Kangara—a crude, fermented alcohol—and 20 litres of the potent distilled brew known as Chang’aa. The illegal substances were destroyed on site by law enforcement authorities.

The suspect, believed to be involved in the production and distribution of the illicit alcohol, was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned in court on Friday.

The crackdown is part of a broader national campaign targeting second-generation and home-brewed alcoholic beverages, which authorities say are often dangerously unregulated and linked to numerous health and social issues.

“We remain vigilant in our commitment to dismantling illegal alcohol networks and protecting the lives and wellbeing of our citizens,” read a statement from the NPS.

Illicit alcohol has been blamed for a string of health crises in recent years, including deaths and blindness caused by toxic batches. Community leaders have praised the ongoing operation, urging continued enforcement and public awareness to deter the consumption of unsafe brews.

The NPS has encouraged the public to report suspicious brewing or sales activities as they intensify surveillance across affected counties.
