Embakasi East MP Babu Owino Secures Release of Over 200 Inmates in Maiden Legal Assignment

In a powerful demonstration of servant leadership and commitment to justice, Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Hon. Babu Owino, has today secured the release of over 200 individuals held at Nairobi Prison for petty offences.

Marking his formal admission to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Hon. Owino undertook his first legal assignment by personally visiting Nairobi Prison to provide legal representation to inmates incarcerated for minor infractions such as traffic offences, consumption of illicit brews, and being drunk and disorderly.

“Nothing can be more fulfilling to my soul than to deploy all my skills and capacities in the service of my fellow citizens,” said the MP. “Most of these individuals were in custody simply because they could not pay fines, raise bail, or provide bond security. Today, I chose to stand with them.”

Using his legal expertise, Hon. Owino worked to secure their immediate release, emphasizing the need for compassion, justice, and reforms in Kenya’s criminal justice system—particularly for economically disadvantaged citizens.

“This is not just a legal duty, it is a spiritual calling,” he added. “For now, I just want to do God’s work by standing up for His children here in Kenya through servant political leadership and the pursuit of formal justice.”

Known for his fiery rhetoric and activism, Babu Owino’s actions today signal a new chapter in his public service journey—one where legal advocacy becomes an instrument for social justice.

The Embakasi East legislator called for a humane approach to justice, particularly for low-income Kenyans often caught in a cycle of incarceration for minor, non-violent offences. He pledged to continue leveraging both his legal qualifications and political position to champion reforms that uphold dignity and fairness for all citizens.

As he concluded his remarks, Hon. Owino invoked the national ethos: “May justice be our shield and defender.”

The bold gesture has been widely lauded by human rights advocates and members of the public, who see it as a meaningful step toward the realization of restorative justice in Kenya.
